Harkens are here! Peaches that is. Trevor planted these trees himself 4 years ago and this is the first year he’ll be bringing them to the market. Harkens are a sweet yellow free-stone peach with a delicious texture. These guys are ripe and ready to eat straight off the tree so don’t tarry or you’ll miss out!
July ‘09. Thanks to our new irrigation system, the trees are thriving – even in this heat! The Sweet Sue peaches have been delicious as always and we have a ton more fruit on the trees. Our new pluot trees are doing well and we’re excited to enjoy their bounty.

The farmers markets are going strong and our trees are full of fruit – what could be better?

In between rain showers, it was another beautiful day at the orchard. The peach, cherry, and apple trees were full of blossoms and, again, our friends the bees were out in force. The chickens we’ve been raising in our garage are getting big and strong, and we’re ready to set them loose in the orchard. So, Trevor also spent some time constructing an ingenious chicken coop of his own design from fruit bins and scrap wood from our friend Dan. Check back soon to see what the chicks think of their new home. More photos available on our Facebook page http://tinyurl.com/BairdFacebook.

It was a glorious spring day today at the orchard. The bees were buzzing around, dutifully pollinating the peach and cherry blossoms, the dog was sniffing about to his heart’s content, Trevor was busy digging holes (by hand, with a shovel!) and planting the new trees, and Grandma Baird was over-seeing the whole affair. You can see all the photos on our Facebook page http://tinyurl.com/BairdFacebook.

The chicks are here! Yesterday we took the plunge and brought 10 pullets home. Not a huge number. Last year we had about 50 chickens at the orchard, but considering that we’re starting these gals off in our living room, we decided 10 would be more manageable. They’re happily chirping away as I type. The dog has been quite curious but hasn’t done any damage … yet. The baby, however, would surely snatch a fistful of our cheep cheeps if we gave her half a chance.
Someday soon we’ll turn them loose on the orchard where they’ll eat bugs, provide some natural fertilizer, and hopefully do some organic weeding for us around the baby trees. But for now, they’re just so darn cute.

The new trees have arrived and Trevor is gearing up to plant. He received three new varieties of peach trees and he’s anxious to get them in the ground. Luckily, there’s plenty of room for the new trees inside our deer-proof fence. If we didn’t have that fence, our trees wouldn’t stand a chance against the deer. Our goofy lab Boomer certainly wouldn’t do much to keep them away. He can’t even scare off the farm cats.
